Canada study permit 2026: proof of funds is now CAD 23,448
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has updated the money students must show for a study permit.
The new amount
For applications made on or after 1 September 2026, a single student studying outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for one year of living costs. This is in addition to first-year tuition and travel costs. Families need more — IRCC publishes a table by family size.
What you can use as proof
IRCC accepts several kinds of evidence, for example:
- a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian bank
- proof that you paid tuition and housing fees
- an education loan from a financial institution
- recent bank statements
- a scholarship or funding letter
Other 2026 points for Indian students
- Most college and bachelor's students also need a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL). Master's and PhD students at public institutions are exempt.
- The Student Direct Stream (SDS) ended in November 2024, so all Indian applicants use the regular process.
- Students can work off campus up to 24 hours a week during term.
The amount is reviewed every year. Check IRCC on the day you apply.
